Hope you’re enjoying Miami Art Week. Palm Beach and West Palm Beach have also evolved into art destinations, especially during season when permanent and pop-up galleries exhibit major works. Here’s a guide to current shows, as well as the annual New Wave Art Wknd and a festival for local artists. Whether you live in the area or would like to take a day trip/weekend jaunt, it’s a great excuse to get out and see some incredible art.
Sotheby’s Palm Beach
Following a tremendously successful two years at the Royal Poinciana Plaza, Sotheby’s Palm Beach gallery relocated to the retail center’s Slat House. The new space’s inaugural exhibition “Condo x Haring: Expressions of the Imagination” celebrates New York artists George Condo and Keith Haring’s rich friendship by displaying their paintings, sculptures and works on paper together.
New Wave Art Wknd
Far ahead of its time regarding inclusion and other modern movements, New Wave Art Wknd returns for its fifth edition from December 2-4. This year’s theme “Service” explores how the art world can best serve communities. The program features public panel discussions on hot topics, a gallery open house and studio visit with artist-in-residence Kirk Henriques.
For its third year of setting up shop for season in West Palm Beach, famed London gallery White Cube opens with new paintings and sculptures by Chinese artist Liu Wei (pictured). The solo presentation closes on January 5, making way for more highlights in 2023, such as Korean artist Park Seo-Bo and art duo Gilbert & George.
Coinciding with its Art Basel Miami Beach booth display, Pace gallery kicks off its third season at Royal Poinciana Plaza with “Lynda Benglis: Color + Form” through December 31. Works range from monotype prints of fanned fronds from her Palmetto series to ceramics depicting elephants and bird’s nests. Pick up her new monograph by Phaidon, too.
Located in Royal Poinciana Plaza’s Slat House, Lehmann Maupin gallery continues Los Angeles artist Alex Prager’s multi-part exhibition that culminates with the premiere of her film at its New York location in January. In the meantime, view “Part Two: Run” with new photographic works that touch on action to empathy in both art and everyday life.
West Palm Beach Arts Festival + Ann Norton
The Armory Art Center in Howard Park has organized exhibitions and classes for all levels and ages since 1987. Attend its sixth annual West Palm Beach Arts Festival from December 3-4, which also features entertainment, tours and family activities. Visit nearby Ann Norton Sculpture Garden’s retrospective “Abundance of Riches: Luis Montoya & Leslie Ortiz 1972-2022,” too.
