The Scoop | Week of August 23

We all have our Labor Day traditions, and many lead to the Hamptons. The seasonal destination on Long Island’s East End celebrates the end of summer in style. To get a head start, we’re sharing our Labor Day guide to the Hamptons. Read on for tips on where to stay, dine, shop, view art and partake in one of the region’s most popular annual events.

Canoe Place Inn & Cottages

The Hamptons claims many gorgeous hotels, but travelers who wish to stay at a brand-new property should book accommodations at Canoe Place Inn & Cottages. Located on six acres at the entrance to Long Island’s East End, the restored historic destination dates to the 1600s. Amenities include Good Ground Tavern and Onda Beauty spa.

Spectre Sea

Like Florida, it’s all about getting out on the water in the Hamptons. Bespoke yacht charter firm Spectre Sea customizes excursions on a San Lorenzo SX 88 and Vanquish VQ 40 to popular destinations like Duryea’s Orient Point, Gardiners Island and Sunset Beach. Its fleet returns to Florida and the Caribbean in October.

Sotheby’s East Hampton

Sotheby’s gallery in East Hampton exhibits “Land and Water: Christo and Jeanne-Claude in America” from August 24 through September 18. The show’s preparatory drawings and collages cover four of the couple’s completed projects, including their wrapping of Miami’s Biscayne Bay islands pictured here, as well as one of their most ambitious unrealized projects.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

The Hamptons’ retail scene heats up in summer. Prada and Valentino unveiled stunning stores, while Chanel pops up in a 19th-century, gray-shingled landmark through Labor Day, and Cartier premiered its Panthere C navy handbag at its temporary boutique until fall. Dior’s Dioriviera beach chic collection is available for season at Gurney’s Montauk, too.

Dining Dash

So many great restaurants, so little time. The Lobster Roll, Sant Ambroeus and Tutto il Giorno opened more locations in the East End. Duryea’s Orient Point introduced a St.Tropez-style beach club. Watch the sunset with an al fresco meal at EHP Resort’s Si Si. Hit farmstands for fresh corn and tomatoes.

Hampton Classic Horse Show

The 46th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show comes to town from August 28-September 4. Attracting top competitors from around the globe, the prestigious equestrian event representing 200 classes in six show rings culminates with Sunday’s $410,000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix. The star-studded affair also features dining and a boutique garden with 70 vendors.
