The Scoop | Week of July 19

Summer break can seem anything but to parents. With the start of the school year not quite close enough, we still need ideas to entertain kids (and keep them out of our hair). Here’s a look at some ideas to plan an easy outing or fuller day that should put smiles on their faces. Ice cream always does the trick, too.

Hobe Lake Ski Club

Hobe Lake Ski Club is serious about water skiing (and in a safe environment). The members-only club on a palm tree-ringed private lake teaches all ages on its brand-new Ski Nautique boat. In addition to summer camps, it offers individual and group lessons by two professional water-ski coaches who specialize in different skill sets.

Hobe Sound is a quiet, green paradise tucked between Tequesta/Jupiter and Stuart. The unincorporated area offers some of the nation’s most unspoiled beaches and preserves including Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, a key sea turtle nesting site. Fancy living here? Discover more local details and property listings with the following links.

Palm Beach Zoo

As a gift to parents, Palm Beach Zoo offers complimentary admission for two children ages 3-12 with each full-priced adult ticket through July 31. Beyond the main attractions, bring bathing suits and towels for the splash pad, take a spin on the Wildlife Carousel, learn in the Nature Play Pavilion and dine at Latitude 26 café.

West Palm Beach sits on the mainland directly across from the island of Palm Beach. The growing city has become a destination in its own right for convention and performing art centers, hip restaurants and shopping of all kinds from major brands to vintage wares. Fancy living here? Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition

Follow in the footsteps of the world’s most famous fictional detective by solving a mystery exclusively created for the Frost Museum of Science’s exhibition about Sherlock Holmes. On view through September 5, the interactive, immersive experience also features original manuscripts, investigative tools, detailed stage sets and Victorian-inspired vignettes for all ages.

Known as the gateway to Latin America, the dynamic city of Miami is constantly evolving with the influx of new residents, visitors, businesses and brands from all over the world. There’s always something new and exciting to try, whether a starchitect-designed space, museum exhibit or hot restaurant. Fancy living here? Bioluminescence Tours

Recently featured in National Geographic, the Space Coast’s seasonal bioluminescence phenomenon is best viewed by kayak. Its tourism website offers a comprehensive list of tour companies for night excursions to the Indian River Lagoon, Mosquito Lagoon and Banana River to wonder at one of nature’s grandest light shows courtesy of dinoflagellates and comb jellies.

Named for the Kennedy Space Center, site of NASA’s SpaceX rocket launches, the Space Coast occupies much of Brevard County. It attracts surfers, cruise passengers (Port Canaveral) and nature lovers looking for pristine white beaches where sea turtles nest. Fancy living here?
