Celebrating its 87th anniversary, Miami Sailing Week is a world renowned event of sailing competition with roots in Havana, Cuba in the 1920s. The regatta started as a three-day event with sailors competing as part of the Cup of Cuba’s Mid-Winter Championship. But in 1962 political unrest forced the Bacardi Cup to move from Havana to Coconut Grove, Florida, where it has since been hosted by the prestigious Coral Reef Yacht Club. Heading into 2015, this Bacardi Cup continues to be the only Cuban-born sporting event to survive in the United States.
The week long event starting the 1st of March attracts more than 200 sailors each year from 23 countries and global media buzz. The 87th running of the BACARDI Cup for the Star class will be the main event of Miami Sailing Week with races March 2nd – March 7th, 2015. Other local support for the event comes from the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, US Sailing Center, Shake a Leg, City of Miami, Coconut Grove Business Development and Miami-Dade County.
