Need a little sparkle to top off your New Year’s Eve outfit? How about a gem-encrusted turban by Spanish fashion designer Maryjane Claverol? The Miami transplant is making waves at local boutiques for her hand-embroidered headwear with glass pearls, gold sequins and Swarovski’s Aurore Boreale crystals, among glamorous materials. Beginning with a stretch satin base, she also creates simpler turbans in solid hues often with decorative flowers—only in Miami could one have everyday and eveningwear turbans. If you’re too shy to wear such a head-turning statement piece, opt for her hand-wrapped earrings of silk-soft thread in bold shapes and vibrant color combinations. Since learning embroidery from Indian craftsmen, she further applies her skills to clothing like ornate silk jackets. Check her web site for retail partners like Mrs. Mandolin.
Inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit “Hamilton,” which incorporates rap music and is on at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts through January 20, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has organized a symposium about the history of contemporary art and hip hop in South Florida on January 3 at 6 p.m. Artists William Cordova, Luis Gispert and Kandy Lopez join others on stage to delve into the basis of their work and connections between the genres. They’ll touch on Southern and Latin American influences dating as far back as the Eighties, when the region gained international recognition for its distinct Miami bass sound as well as the rise of pirate radio. Prior to their panel, the complimentary event offers dance and rap workshops and demonstrations for all ages.

Mainland Miami patrons of culinary couple Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth no longer have to drive to South Beach for their down-home cooking at Stiltsville Fish Bar. The chefs will launch the second location of their popular New York restaurant Root & Bone in South Miami on December 29. (Note, their new venture won’t be open on New Year’s Eve but invites diners for a beautiful brunch to celebrate New Year’s Day.) The Southern menu features pimento cheese dip, sweet tea-brined fried chicken, corn spoon bread, shrimp and grits and chilled watermelon. Booth oversaw the cozy décor’s distressed wood interiors and bar fashioned from salvaged doors and matte black quartz. They’re going for a real neighborhood vibe with fun perks like live music and ladies’ night on Thursdays.

The NightGarden, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens’ Instagram-angled, immersive installation through January 6, is hosting a family-friendly New Year’s Eve bash. For a slightly higher price than the magical wonderland’s regular admission, revelers will be treated to fireworks, a dj set and all the festive favors from tiaras to noisemakers from 7 p.m. til midnight. Various vendors are providing different types of cuisine and drinks including champagne to complete the big night. Kilburn Media, a Los Angeles-based film, tv and event production company, custom created the NightGarden’s digital vignettes, where giant trees talk like in “The Wizard of Oz” and 10,000 butterflies glow to the amazement of their real-life counterparts in the popular, onsite butterfly garden. Meander through illuminated mazes in neon landscapes to discover more delights.
