The Scoop | Week of November 22

JILL PENMAN November 24, 2022

Though most of us have turkey dinner on our mind, the annual Art Basel Miami Beach and its many satellite fairs and festivities begin right after the holiday weekend. In addition to our ONE Guide to Miami Art Week 2022, here are extra suggestions for what to see and do during this exciting time. Whether we see you in the convention center halls or on the beach, have a great art-filled experience.

Meridians

Among Art Basel Miami Beach’s sectors, Meridians always makes a statement for its sheer size. Museo Tamayo director Magalí Arriola returns to curate 20 monumental installations that challenge the western art canon. Works include Cauleen Smith’s film “Sojourner” honoring the iconic abolitionist, Judy Chicago’s hand-crocheted “Birth” and Devan Shimoyama’s “The Grove,” pictured, about gang violence.

Prizm Art Fair

After the early days of Design Miami/ fair, the Miami Design District finally plays host to a second fair. Titled “Vernacular À la Mode,” Prizm Art Fair’s 10th edition pops up at 4220 North Miami Avenue, with a side show at Little Haiti Cultural Center. Exhibitors focus on works by African and African diaspora artists.

Leandro Erlich: Liminal

Opening at Pérez Art Museum Miami on November 29, “Liminal” marks Argentine artist Leandro Erlich’s first monographic survey show in North America. Dan Cameron guest curated its 16 site-specific works that depict quotidian scenarios to form a larger narrative. Several invite interaction such as the installations titled Hair Salon, Classroom and Swimming Pool.

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami

The ICA, Miami presents two solo shows, including “Michel Majerus: Progressive Aesthetics,” the first U.S. museum survey of the late Luxembourger whose life was tragically cut short. Known for her colorful, cubistic-style murals from Lincoln Center to Miami Worldcenter, Nina Chanel Abney creates a new installation with “Big Butch Energy.”

Rubell Museum

Rubell Museum premieres several exhibits on November 28. As if proud parents, founders Mera and Don Rubell gush over Franco-Senegalese artist-in-residence Alexandre Diop, whose new acquisition is pictured. The museum also highlights work by Patricia Ayres, Doron Langberg, Tesfaye Urgessa, Clayton Schiff, Jared McGriff and Jo Messer. Visit new sister museum in Washington D.C., too.

YoungArts

For its inaugural solo show dedicated to an emerging artist during Miami Art Week, YoungArts exhibits Mark Fleuridor’s “Sunshine.” The Miami native was the 2015 YoungArts Winner in Visual Arts and a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Artist Derrick Adams co-curated its multimedia works depicting the cycle of life through Fleuridor’s Haitian heritage.

El Espacio 23

Founded by art collector Jorge M. Pérez in 2019, El Espacio 23 unveils its third show. “You Know Who You Are: Recent Acquisitions of Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection” features works by over 100 Cuban and Cuban diaspora artists that deal with collective memory and deconstructed hierarchies, among many themes.

Art in Common

Abby Pucker and Zoe Lukov, respective alums of Sotheby’s and Faena Art who founded Art in Common nonprofit, are putting on a group show in the Miami Design District (39 NE 39th Street) from November 28 to December 11. “Boil, Toil + Trouble” features 30 contemporary artists from Marina Abramović to Miamian Naomi Fisher about water’s fascinating facets.
